The truth about astrophotography

Why do so many people never buy a telescope?

Central Europe · The reality

  • ❌ Light pollution almost everywhere
  • ❌ Bad weather – rarely clear nights
  • ❌ High equipment costs, rapid depreciation
  • ❌ Setup, focusing, alignment – every single time
  • ❌ Cold, dew, unpredictable conditions

StarShare · La Palma

  • ✅ One of Europe's darkest astronomical sites
  • ✅ ~250 clear nights per year at the site
  • ✅ Available immediately from €15 / hour – no investment
  • ✅ Open app, choose target, start imaging
  • ✅ ~20 °C night temperature, significantly lower dew risk

Because of light pollution and fewer clear nights, the same shot under a typical Central European sky often needs many times the exposure time it would on La Palma – do the maths for your own location.

What StarShare is

A fully set-up smart telescope on La Palma – that you control from home via app.

No equipment to buy. No setup, no bad-weather frustration, no fixed costs. You book telescope time once and image your chosen target live – under one of Europe's darkest astronomical sites.

Weather at site

Observing conditions

GFS model data for our site in the south of La Palma at 515 m, delivered via the Windy API. We deliberately show the forecast for our own site, not the one for Roque de los Muchachos at 2400 m. Cloud cover is split into low, mid, and high layers — the most relevant distinction for astrophotographers. Calima index via Open-Meteo (PM10). Data is updated server-side every 30 minutes.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What happens if it's cloudy?

Sessions only take place in suitable conditions (you can see cloud cover and calima index live on the site). Your paid observation time never expires – it is retained until you can image your target under good conditions.

How do I receive my images?

The finished stacked image is visible directly in the SeeStar App during and after your session – save it to your device gallery from there. If you booked FITS raw frames as an add-on, you also receive a download link by email after the session (valid 72 hours).

Can I control the telescope myself?

Yes. Via the ZWO SeeStar App on your phone or tablet you choose the target, start the exposure and watch live stacking in real time. Alignment, focus and tracking are handled automatically by the SeeStar.

How long are my images available?

The stacked image in the SeeStar App is stored on your own device and remains available indefinitely once you have saved it. If you booked FITS raw frames, the download link is valid for 72 hours – download your archive in time, as the raw data is deleted automatically after that.

What is a SeeStar S30 Pro?

A fully automated smart telescope by ZWO with a 30 mm apochromat and integrated live stacking. It delivers impressive deep-sky images for an entry-level device – we position it honestly: a dark-sky experience, not a professional observatory.

What prior knowledge do I need?

None. You choose a target from a curated list (galaxies, nebulae, star clusters, matching the season) and the system does the rest. Advanced users can set their own exposure parameters.

What devices and apps do I need?

You need a smartphone or tablet (iOS or Android) with the free ZWO SeeStar App. That controls the telescope during your session. The booking itself works in any modern browser.

Why must my email match my SeeStar App account?

The telescope connection runs through the SeeStar App: after your booking we invite you directly to your SeeStar via an in-app invitation – and that invitation goes to the email address you booked with. If it does not exactly match your SeeStar App account, the invitation cannot be delivered and you lose access to your session.

Please make sure you have registered in the SeeStar App with exactly the email address you use for booking. If you don't have an account yet: download the app, register with your booking email – done.

Changes after booking: If you need to change the email address, write to us at least 24 hours before your session from your original booking email, with your ticket number and the new address, to buchung@starshare-lapalma.astrocube.de.

How is my observation time counted?

The total telescope time during your session is billed – the full period the device is reserved and working for you. The SeeStar needs to slew to the target, focus and align before useful exposures begin. Your actual usable image exposure time is therefore always shorter than the billed session time. Completely lost sessions (e.g. due to cloud) do not count against you – your hours are retained.

How do I pay and how can I cancel?

After booking you receive an invoice with a payment link by email within 2 hours. Payment must arrive within 24 hours, otherwise the ticket expires automatically. Manage your bookings (cancel, redeem credit) at My StarShare.

What is My StarShare?

My StarShare is your personal customer area. It shows all your bookings, your remaining hours and your scheduled observations in one place. You can cancel there, request a change and download the calendar entry for your session. Signing in works without a password: enter your email address and you will receive a sign-in link that is valid for 15 minutes. Open My StarShare

How long is my observation time valid?

Your booked hour quota is valid for 12 months from payment. You don't need to use everything at once – spread your hours across multiple targets and nights.

When do I receive credit for lost observation time?

Lost observation time is credited once it reaches 50% of the booked session length. Occasional passing clouds or light gusts are to be accepted – weather is outside our control. If conditions are persistently poor on your booked date, we will offer alternative dates.

What happens if the remote connection drops?

The remote connection may occasionally drop – this is likely due to the beta phase of ZWO's remote telescope network. It does not necessarily mean the SeeStar has stopped imaging: as long as it remains registered in the local on-site network, it normally keeps running and capturing autonomously. Experienced users are encouraged to set up an imaging plan before their session. If an incident occurs, it can be reviewed the next day using server-side log files – we provide them on request. The same replacement-time conditions as for weather cancellations apply to connection issues.

How do I contact support?

Customer support is available via Telegram or email. You can find the StarShare Telegram channel linked on this page. We typically respond within 24 hours.
